"3-gatsu no Lion"

Synopsis

Rei Kiriyama is a 17-year-old pro shogi player who lives by himself in an apartment in Tokyo, and he does a poor job of taking care of himself. Luckily he meets the Kawamoto family, consisting of the three sisters Akari, Hinata, and Momo and their grandfather. They take Rei in and give him food and love, lending him the help he needs to survive on his own and pursue his shogi career.

3-gatsu no Lion spends about half the time focusing on Rei's shogi career and the other half on the Kawamoto sisters and Rei's interactions with them. The shogi part gets more and more interesting as the show progresses, even if you don't know how to play shogi. The sisters part is heartwarming and a good break from the shogi. They are a poor family and struggle to get by, but they make the best of their lives and help teach Rei how great a family can be. Of particular note is a bullying arc in the second season that is masterfully handled.

3. Minami-ke

"Minami-ke"

"Minami-ke"

Synopsis

The Minami household consists of three sisters: Haruka, Kana, and Chiaki. Haruka is the oldest and acts as a mother for the others, spending her time cooking and cleaning when she's not being lazy beneath the kotatsu; Kana is mischievous and energetic, always trying to get out of doing any work; and Chiaki has a sharp tongue and a quick wit and often orders her friends around. The anime portrays their everyday lives.

Minami-ke provides probably the most realistic depiction of sisters in anime. They talk, they fight, they laze around the house. A true slice of life, there is no overarching plot aside from the girls slowly growing up. They interact with friends, deal with school issues, and celebrate holidays together. There is also some romance that pops up now and again, though it never really goes anywhere. If you want to kick back and relax and watch sisters be sisters, this is the anime for you.

Note on quality: There is a huge drop in art/animation quality after the first season which doesn't fully recover until the 4th season, but the comedy and general atmosphere remains unchanged. It might take a couple episodes for you to get used to the new style, but once you do, you'll enjoy the show almost as much as you did during the 1st season.

"Figure 17: Tsubasa & Hikaru"

"Figure 17: Tsubasa & Hikaru"

2. Figure 17: Tsubasa & Hikaru

MyAnimeList Score: 7.30

Genres: Sci-Fi, Slice of Life

Episodes: 13

Studio: OLM

Aired: Spring 2001

Synopsis

10-year-old Tsubasa Shiina moves to Hokkaido with her father, but she is too shy to make friends at her new school. When a UFO crashes near her home, she rushes to the scene and fuses with a metal alien life form to destroy a savage alien monster. When the battle is over, the alien that fused with the girl becomes her identical twin sister Hikaru and begins to live with her. Hikaru helps Tsubasa to open up and make friends while they battle the continuing alien threat.

The relationship between Tsubasa and Hikaru is very endearing. Though Hikaru is actually an alien/metal shapeshifter, she becomes a true sister to Tsubasa. She teaches her the meaning of friendship and family and brings love and joy into her life. Overall, Figure 17 is a heartwarming show sure to leave you in tears.

Kyou and Asu are ideal sisters, always looking out for each other. This anime is often bittersweet due to their unfortunate circumstances, but the sisters find a way to be optimistic time and time again. The title is a bit misleading. I thought this was a post about wincest stories like Oreimo. Then again it is kind of my fault for having my head in the gutter.
